The Hide Bar - Newsletter

Number 4, June 2007

Hello all

Welcome to our fourth newsletter, June 2007.

This month sees a new food menu with some dishes for the summer and the continuation of our popular two-course lunch for £9.50 (menu available to download from the website).

Coming shortly we will also have a full list of the spirits we have behind the bar in case you fancy exploring. For those that don’t drink neat, If you’d like to upgrade your cocktail (pimp my drink?), then it’ll only cost you the price of the spirit plus a pound to convert. For example, a Martini with Tanqueray 10 will be £4+£4+£1 (£9 instead of £6 with house) and a Daiquiri with El Dorado 15 year old Guyana rum £3+£3+£1 (£7 instead of £6 with house). Worth experimenting with a few alternatives we feel.

Going with the new theme, we have another rosé to add to the list - Principe de Viana Cab-Sauv from Navarra (£15/£3.70), as well as a new beer – Sleeman’s Honey Brown from Canada at £3.40.

Hopefully see you soon to try something new!

EVENTS

Tuesday tastings: They last roughly an hour and include random facts, helpful hints and a little bit of tasting. They are free to attend for the moment and you don’t need to book. Just turn up and see what’s going on.

This month (June), we have:

Tuesday the 5 th, 7pm
The Bloody Mary: our resident Italian will be talking though the Venetian origins of the drink and a few different options to tailor it to your personal salt, sour and spice requirements.

Tuesday the 12 th, 7pm
Vodka: a very knowledgeable representative from Ketel One (our house pour), will be here to chat about the spirit in general, as well as a few drinks with their brand in particular. We use it for loads of our vodka cocktails and infusions (a goji berry infusion works surprisingly well shaken with pomegranate juice, lemon and rose liqueur – trust me!)

Tuesday the 19 th, 7pm
Pinot Noir: bound to be popular, we’ll be looking at the grape and how it’s used - from New Zealand to the US and back home to Burgundy. For those that are interested, we’ll also be offering the chance to try a few more select bottles for a very reasonable price.

Tuesday the 26 th, 7pm
Flavoured beers: we’ll run through our coffee, chocolate and raspberry from Meantime, plus the Liefman’s Kriek (cherry), and a surprise mystery beer (whatever we find that looks interesting at the beer market…)

Specials

Still new on a weekly basis, but there’ll be some fantastically priced bin-end wines, our ‘ America’s finest’ combination of Brooklyn Lager with a shot of Buffalo Trace bourbon (£5), an Apricot Sidecar ( Cognac, lemon juice and apricot liqueur) and for the more adventurous, an Absinthe Sour.

Random bit

A few quotes this time. Drink related, some of which are worth heeding, others of which probably best ignored. We’ll leave you to decide which.

“Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk.  That will teach you to keep your mouth shut”
Ernest Hemingway

“I feel sorry for people who don't drink.  When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day.”
Frank Sinatra

“Wine is sunlight, held together by water.”
Galileo

“I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me.”
Winston Churchill

“The water was not fit to drink. To make it palatable, we had to add whiskey. By diligent effort, I learned to like it.”
Winston Churchill

“Be careful to trust a person who does not like wine.”
Karl Marx

“Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”
Benjamin Franklin

"Sometimes too much to drink is barely enough."
Mark Twain

"I drink it when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and I drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it, unless I'm thirsty."
Mme Lily Bollinger
